What Is llms.txt for AI Search? A Practical Guide for Businesses in 2026

Updated: 3 days ago

AI is changing how people discover information online. Traditional search engines remain important, but people are also using AI-powered search experiences and conversational platforms to research businesses, compare services, find professionals, and answer increasingly detailed questions.
This raises a new question for businesses: what is llms.txt for AI search, and should you add it to your website?
llms.txt is a proposed standard that provides AI agents with a concise, structured guide to important information and resources on a website. It does not improve Google rankings, guarantee visibility in ChatGPT, or replace SEO. Instead, it provides another machine-readable way for systems that support the format to find and understand selected website resources.
I implemented llms.txt on my own JVG Digital Solutions website as part of my work with SEO, website optimization, and AI search visibility. This gave me an opportunity to evaluate the technology through practical implementation rather than treating it as a theoretical AI SEO trend.
What Is llms.txt?
An llms.txt file is a Markdown-based resource designed to help AI agents find and understand important information available on a website.
A typical webpage is designed primarily for people. It can contain navigation, images, scripts, forms, animations, and other elements surrounding the main information.
An llms.txt file provides a more concise representation. Under the current specification, it can contain a summary of the website or project along with organized links to important resources and descriptions explaining what those resources contain.
For example, a business could use it to point toward:
core service pages
About or team information
case studies
portfolio work
important resources
selected articles
location or market information
Version 2 of the llms.txt proposal, released in August 2026, also supports files within specific website paths and introduces ways for sites to indicate Markdown versions of pages and the relevant llms.txt resource to agents.
Is llms.txt the Same as a Sitemap or robots.txt?
No. llms.txt, sitemap.xml, and robots.txt serve different purposes.
A sitemap helps search engines discover indexable pages on a website. A robots.txt file communicates crawling instructions to automated systems. An llms.txt file is intended to provide AI agents with a curated guide to useful website information and resources.
The llms.txt specification is designed to coexist with these established website technologies rather than replace them.
This distinction is important because adding llms.txt does not mean a business can stop thinking about crawlability, indexing, structured data, internal linking, or other technical SEO fundamentals.
Why Could llms.txt Matter for Businesses?
The potential value of llms.txt for AI search comes from a broader change in how people look for information online.
A potential customer may still use Google to search for a service, but they may also ask an AI platform a much more detailed question, such as:
“Find an SEO specialist in the Philippines who also works with website optimization.”
AI systems may retrieve and interpret information from multiple sources before presenting an answer. This makes it increasingly important for websites to communicate clearly who the business is, what it offers, where it operates, and what evidence supports its expertise.
An llms.txt file can provide systems that use the format with a curated path toward some of that information.
However, the underlying website still matters more. A well-organized llms.txt file cannot compensate for weak service pages, inaccurate business information, poor content, or technical problems that make important pages difficult to access.
Can Small Businesses Use llms.txt?
Yes. Small businesses can use llms.txt, but whether it deserves priority depends on the quality of the existing website and SEO foundation.
A salon, for example, could point toward its services, location, team expertise, specialties, and useful educational content. A tattoo studio could prioritize artist portfolios, specialties, booking information, and aftercare resources.
A professional services company might emphasize its services, geographic markets, expertise, case studies, and resources. A consultant could prioritize professional experience, services, portfolio work, results, and original articles.
A small business does not need hundreds of pages.
In fact, having a smaller website can make the process easier because the objective is not to include every URL. It is to identify the resources that best explain the business and provide useful evidence about what it does.
What Should Be Included in an llms.txt File?
A useful llms.txt file should be curated around the website rather than treated as another URL directory.
The current specification uses Markdown and can include a site or project name, a concise summary, contextual information, and sections containing links with descriptions.
For a business website, that might translate into information about:
the business and what it does
core services
areas of expertise
important About or team pages
case studies and portfolio work
useful resources
geographic markets or locations where relevant
The better question is not simply “Which URLs should I add?”
It is:
“Which information best helps a system understand this business, its services, expertise, and useful resources?”
That is where SEO and content strategy become important.
How Do You Add llms.txt to a Website?
Implementing llms.txt involves identifying the most useful website resources, organizing them according to the specification, publishing the file in an accessible location, and testing that the links and information are correct.
The exact technical process depends on the website platform and hosting environment.
Before implementation, I would review the website’s primary services, target markets, strongest content, case studies, expertise, and other pages that provide meaningful context about the business.
Once the file is live, it should be checked to make sure it is publicly accessible and pointing toward the intended resources. It should also be reviewed when important services, URLs, locations, or website content change.
The current llms.txt specification recommends concise language, informative link descriptions, and avoiding ambiguous terminology or unexplained jargon.
Does llms.txt Improve Google SEO?
No. Google has explicitly stated that llms.txt is not required for Google Search and does not positively or negatively affect Google Search visibility or rankings. Google says businesses may still maintain the file for other services or systems that use it.
That makes an important distinction between SEO and experimentation with emerging AI technologies.
Adding llms.txt should not be presented as a Google ranking tactic.
It also does not replace title tags, content optimization, technical SEO, internal linking, structured data, sitemaps, or other established optimization practices.
Does llms.txt Help You Appear in ChatGPT or Other AI Platforms?
There is no guarantee that adding llms.txt will cause a website to be cited, recommended, or surfaced by ChatGPT or another AI platform.
The llms.txt format has gained adoption, and version 2 of the proposal notes that thousands of websites now publish these files and that several documentation platforms generate them automatically. However, it remains a proposed convention rather than a universal requirement for AI visibility.
This is why businesses should be cautious about claims that installing an llms.txt file will suddenly make them “rank in AI.”
A more realistic objective is to make useful website information clear, structured, accessible, and easier for systems that support the format to navigate.
What Should You Do Before Adding llms.txt?
If a business has limited SEO resources, llms.txt should not usually be the first priority.
Before implementing it, I would check whether:
important pages can be crawled and indexed
services are clearly explained
the website targets relevant search intent
business information is accurate and consistent
internal linking connects related information
important pages demonstrate genuine expertise
the website works well for actual visitors
Case studies, original insights, professional experience, portfolio work, and measurable results can also provide stronger evidence about a business than simply adding another technical file.
The principle is straightforward:
Build useful information first. Then make that information easier for search engines and AI systems to understand and access.
Why I Added llms.txt to the JVG Digital Solutions website
I implemented llms.txt for AI search on my own website because I wanted practical experience with an emerging technology rather than discussing AI search only in theory.
The JVG Digital Solutions website contains information about my SEO services, website optimization work, digital marketing experience, case studies, results, and professional expertise. The llms.txt file gives systems that choose to use the convention another structured path toward those resources.
Implementing it also allows me to evaluate how technologies surrounding AI search continue to develop.
My approach is to test emerging technologies where they make sense while separating experimentation from unsupported claims. I view llms.txt as worth understanding, but not as a replacement for SEO or a guaranteed way to gain AI visibility.
Is llms.txt Worth Adding in 2026?
llms.txt can be worth considering when a website already has a strong SEO, content, and technical foundation and the business wants to prepare for emerging AI-agent discovery.
The format has continued to develop, including the release of version 2 in August 2026, but businesses should keep its current limitations in perspective.
If a website has indexing problems, weak service pages, inaccurate information, or poor content, those issues deserve attention first.
The wider opportunity is not simply adding one file. It is preparing a website for a search environment in which people, traditional search engines, AI-powered search experiences, and AI agents may interact with online information in different ways.
For businesses exploring llms.txt for AI search, the most important thing is to view it as one part of a broader SEO and AI visibility strategy rather than a shortcut to rankings or AI citations.
